Deccan Radio - 08 March 2009 - Intl. Women's Day

Postby admin » Thu Jan 22, 2009 11:18 am

March 8th of every year is celebrated as International Women's Day. It is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women.

The first IWD was observed on 28 February 1909 in the United States following a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. The idea of having an international women's day was first put forward at the turn of the 20th century amid rapid world industrialization and economic expansion that led to protests over working conditions. By urban legend,[1][2] women from clothing and textile factories staged one such protest on 8 March 1857 in New York City.[3] The garment workers were protesting against very poor working conditions and low wages. The protesters were attacked and dispersed by police. These women established their first labor union in the same month two years later.

Today, we are celebrating 100th Year of Women's Day.

Deccan Radio - 10 March 2009 - 1st Phone call made

Postby admin » Wed Mar 11, 2009 10:09 am

This day in the year 1876, Alexander Graham Bell made the first successful telephone call by saying "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you." As a result, telephone was born.

On 10 March 1876, Bell succeeded in getting his telephone to work, using a liquid transmitter. Vibration of the diaphragm caused a needle to vibrate in the water which varied the electrical resistance in the circuit. When Bell spoke the famous sentence "Mr Watson — Come here —I want to see you" into the liquid transmitter,Watson, listening at the receiving end in an adjoining room, heard the words clearly.

There are many more events you could know including the birthday of Osama Bin Laden by listening to this show.
